Red Cross-Get To Know Us Befpre You Need Us By Angela Armson

We all know about the blood drives and the assistance to flood victims but seldom do we hear much about the role that the American Red Cross does for military families. Although one would think that the government would have communications between military families and the service men and women  down pat that is not the case.  That is where the Red Cross comes in. In family emergencies such as births, deaths, sickness, missing persons, the Red Cross is the communication link 24/7.
The Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton during the Civil War, 1861 in an effort to assist soldier’s families and give aid to the injured. Today, in addition to what was mentioned earlier they provide transportation and financial assistance, and services to veteran’s hospitals.
In 2009 there were 48 families who benefitted from the services to the military here in Fond du Lac and that number has eclipsed 100 in some years.
The annual budget for the local Red Cross office is about $300,000.00; they rely on donations for their existence.
